Complete poem (not published until 1910) by Henry Lawson (1867 – 1922). His friend Hannah Thornburn (1878 – 1902) had died young of a feverish infection just before Lawson’s return from London in 1902. “The dead girl” was buried at Brighton cemetery, Victoria, where the poet Adam Lindsay Gordon ( 1833 - 1870) is also buried.
