I can read and write multi-digit numbers by breaking down the expanded form into the number of each place value.
Yesterday, you learned what expanded form of a number is. You determined what characteristics make up expanded form, the value of each digit and the order from greatest to least, and has to be written as an expression with addition or plus signs.
Today, you will learn how to break down those digits of expanded form to the number of quantity of each place value. That is going to show us just how big or small a number really is. The value of the number will be very clear to us.
Let’s take a look at the number forty-three thousand two hundred nineteen. We know that by looking and listening, we can write the number 43,219. We can write the numeral, the word form, and even the expanded form: 40,000 + 3,000 + 200 + 10 + 9. Let’s dig further to understand just how big this number really is. We will break down this expanded form to the number, or quantity, of each place value. To do that, let’s review the name of each places. We have the ones, tens, and hundreds. These are, remember, the singles group. Next we have the thousands group of three digits. We have the one thousands, the ten thousands, and the hundred thousands. Like this.
Looking back at our expanded form 43,219 I can see that forty thousand is actually four ten thousands because it is sitting in the ten thousands place. I can write with parentheses four times ten thousand. That’s a big number but I am not done. Looking back again, I see three thousand. I see that the three one thousands that it has three one thousands because it is sitting the three is sitting in the one thousands place. I can write with parentheses three times one thousand. So far, my number is parentheses four times ten thousand plus three times one thousand. But I am not done, am I? I can see that two hundred is two one hundreds because the two is sitting at the hundred’s place. I can write with parentheses two times one hundred. So now, my number in expanded form broken down into the number of each place value is four times ten thousand plus three times one thousand times to times one hundred. But, I am still not done. I still need to break down my tens and ones. So, here we go. Four times ten thousand plus three times one thousand times to times one hundred plus one times ten plus nine times one. Wow, now I can see how big this number really is. I have broken down the expanded form even further to the number or the quantity of each place value.
Watch how I can express two hundred sixty-one thousand eight hundred thirty-seven in all these ways. Word form: two hundred sixty-one thousand eight hundred thirty-seven. Also, in numeral form, expanded form, and now even further expanded form with parentheses and place values. There it is. All the ways to express the number. Remember this is the expanded form, and this is the expanded form with parentheses and the number of place values. Two times one hundred thousand plus six times ten thousand plus one times one thousand plus eight times one hundred plus three times ten plus seven times one. Now, I can see the value of that number. Breaking down the number really makes it clear to me just how big that number is.
Now, I want you to try. First, I will write the number in word form. I want you to write the numeral, check with the person beside you, then move on when you’re ready to expanded form. Again, check with others around you. When you’re in agreement move on to breaking the expanded form down to the number of each place value like we practiced today with the parentheses. If you like me to walk with you through it, come up closer to me and we’ll do it together. Otherwise, go for it. Here’s your number now.
Today, you will practice writing all of these expressions for a number of new journals. I will show you how to set up your journal first and we will do one together. After that, you will continue to write expressions for a number that you and your partner decide to do together.
When we do this, numbers really begin to show us their size. Their values or how big or small they really are become so clear. Then in the days to come, we will be able to easily compare one number to another.
